Technical Game Designer at Splash Damage (11/2017 - Present)

Splash Damage has worked on a wide number of successful projects, from Gears of War to Dirty Bomb to Wolfenstein Enemy Territory: Splash has a legacy of creating online multiplayer blockbusters.

As a Technical Game Designer at Splash, we have three pillars I helped the department define:
  • Design Through Technology
  • Be the Bridge between Code and Design
  • Mastery Through Flexibility
My everyday role at Splash is to live these pillars to ensure the ease of communication between other Designers and Coders so that each understands the needs and desires of the other, empirically implement and test design hypothesis', and make sure we put out a damn good game.

Unfortunately due to some bad circumstances for the company and internal setbacks I haven't released anything I've worked on at Splash yet, though we have a number of projects on the way I'm either involved in or have been involved with in the past - and when it happens I'll update the site with more info on, concretely, I was responsible for.

Map Designer at SCS Software (5/2016 - 10/2017)

SCS Software has two major products, Euro Truck Simulator 2 and American Truck Simulator.  Perhaps unsurprisingly, as the only American in the company I landed on the American Truck Simulator (or ATS) team. 

As a Map Designer my predominant responsibility is the research, design, and implementation of new map content but that's not to say it's not without it's footnote responsibilities.  The work requires a great deal of communication between and coordination with the art team to produce the right assets, as well as some more unique responsibilities I've fallen into.  As the only US citizen at SCS, I find I spend quite a lot of my time editing company materials and naming assets.  It's kind of fun.

Game Designer at Bohemia Interactive Simulations (​8/2014 - 4/2016)

Bohemia Interactive Simulations has one major product - the Virtual Battlespace Engine, hereafter referred to as VBS.  VBS is essentially a game engine with a ton of military content: vehicles, soldier types, weapon types, all rendered with as realistic physics as the standard six-year-old-military-laptop can handle.  They do have subsidiary projects - VBS Tactics is one of them, and the major title I worked on during my time as a Game Designer there.  I was one of three designers on the project, and most of the work involved using Behavior Trees to build realistic group - between the sizes of Fireteam and Company - AI.

Unfortunately the higher echelons made some poor financial decisions and I was one of the third of the company that got laid off in Spring 2016.  After the release of versions 1.0 - 1.2 and a purchase by the Australian military Tactics was shelved, though I have friends that still work there who inform me the project is scheduled to be picked up again in the Summer of 2017.  Unless you're really into following the military simulations scene though, I doubt you'll hear much about it.

Regardless of the success of the project Bohemia Interactive Simulations was a blast to work for and I learned so much there.  You can follow this link to read more about what I did during my time with them.
